So most of you might not know, but I'm a geek. I hide it really really well, but I love math and love writing computer programs, even though I'm beyond terrible at it. I realized just how much of a geek I was after working at my company and having conversations with my coworker about a multitude of things. I really realized it after I noticed that since I can remember, I have been obsessed with clocks. I watch analog clocks to see when the second hand will make an isosceles circle with the minute and second hand. Although trying to explain that seems rather odd.
In any case, I came across this site and couldn't resist posting it here. What cracks me up more than anything is that this was written for people who had never heard of any of these. I had heard of many of them, 15 out of 36 to be exact, and not just "oh yeah, I've heard of that" but really "I know exactly what that is." And not that it's a particularly geeky site, but what really made me want to post about my inner geek is another story.
Last year, someone bought me the daily calendar of Jeopardy. I loved it and my coworker loved it too. This year, I saw a Mad Libs one and decided we HAD to get it and keep a list of everything. So, we've been keeping a list of all the words we've used, broken down into parts of speech. We can only use a word once, but if it happens to be a verb and a noun (for example, arch) or a color and an adjective (for example, green) or a color, food, noun and adjective (for example, orange), we can use it in as many categories as it fits.
The reason for all of this is that Avogadro's number is one that I came up with. I haven't had a class that required it in YEARS (being a religion and history major in college will rule out taking most science or math courses and I got away with one chemistry class [for non-science majors], astronomy in place of physics [again, for non-science majors] and only two math classes [logic in place of math and statistics for when I was planning on minoring in Psychology]) and yet, it was still stuck in my head somewhere.
I suppose it just goes to show that the human mind is incredible. :)
